Wear Recycled

Wear Recycled

We know efficiency alone is not enough. The world needs systemic change at scale, and to meet this change we need to develop how we interact with nature. We need to collaborate rather than compete. And we need to start looking upon waste as a resource and adopt a more circular mindset. We believe the future of innovation is sustainable innovation.

At Tretorn we look upon high-quality waste as an opportunity, a resource to be harvested and developed into a circular process, while slowly eliminating the very concept of waste. Nobody can do everything but everyone can do something - wear recycled.

Ocean-Shell®

Every year more than 12 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans. That is a truckload of waste every minute. With that said, all of us need to change how we interact with nature and find a more innovative approach of using resources.

In 2018 we created our own OCEAN-SHELL®-fabric. The OCEAN-SHELL® is a three-layer fabric made from recycled PET bottles collected from the ocean outside of Taiwan. The fabric is equipped with a hydrophilic membrane, which is also made from recycled PET from the ocean. This makes the fabric a full circle renewable source adapted to be recycled again.

From the OCEAN-SHELL® fabric, we create our winterized rain parka Arch Jacket and Sarek Parka which is a high-quality winter jacket for cold days. Both are waterproof and breathable and free from fluorocarbon. They are made in minimalistic and timeless design but with all the benefits from a functional outdoor jacket.

1. Collecting plastic from the oceans

With OCEAN-SHELL® consumer plastics and bottles from the oceans around Taiwan is collected to be recycled.

2. From pellets to yarn

PET bottles are made in a very strong material and are extremely suitable to bring back to a circular process. The collected PET is firstly cleaned and transformed into dry pellets. From dry pellets, it is possible to melt and spin the new polyester yarn.

3.Creating OCEAN-SHELL®

The recycled polyester yarn is then ready to be transformed into Tretorn OCEAN-SHELL® fabric. It is a layered fabric with hydrophilic membranes making the fabric waterproof, breathable and since it is all made out of PET, it is circular and recyclable again.

Ocean Net

Fishing nets are considered to be one of the biggest environmental threats in our oceans. 650.000 tons of fishing nets are left as debris on the bottoms of our oceans, dumped by the fishing fleets. They then drift with the wind and currents for years as “ghost nets”. Eventually, they can end up on a reef where they can knock out entire ecosystems. Ghost nets are considered among the greatest killers in our oceans. Approximately one million seabirds and one hundred thousand marine mammals and turtles die each year due to debris in our oceans.

But fishing nets also happen to be made of some of the best nylon materials in the world. ECONYL® is made out of recycled fishing nets, collected to prevent ghost nets in our oceans and at the same time deliver a premium product of the best quality to the conscious customers.

Ocean Net is a unique sustainable fabric, mixing organic cotton with ECONYL® - regenerated nylon from fishing nets and consumer waste found in the oceans. It is a waterproof and breathable material.

1. Rescue

The ECONYL® Regeneration System starts with rescuing from landfills and oceans all over the world. That waste is then sorted and cleaned to recover all of the nylon possible.

2. Regenerate

The nylon waste is recycled right back to its original purity. That means ECONYL® regenerated nylon is exactly the same as virgin nylon. After the waste is collected different types of waste are cleaned and prepared for regeneration. As part of the cleaning process, materials other than nylon are removed and sent to other supply chains.

3. Remake

ECONYL® regenerated nylon is processed into textile yarn that is later on made into jackets. One of the best things with regenerated nylon is that nylon has the potential to be recycled infinitely, without ever losing its quality.

Natural rubber

The raw material natural rubber is obtained from sap from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). The sap is dried and processed into a mass, then packed into a block which in turn is sent to the manufacturer of rubber boots. The factory uses natural rubber as an ingredient in the production to create the boots.

The characteristics of the rubber include high strength and the ability to stretch many times without breaking. Natural rubber compounds are exceptionally flexible, have good electrical insulators and are resistant to many corrosive substances.

By 2022 all new products will be made out of FSC certified natural rubber.

FSC certified

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and is an independent, international membership organization that works for environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable use of the world's forests, through its FSC certification system.

Certified companies follow FSC's standards for forestry and traceability. The FSC label allows consumers and companies to choose rubber products that come from responsible forestry, i.e. forestry that takes people and the environment into account.

GRS certified

GRS (Global Recycling Standard) is an international and full product standard that sets requirements for recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. The goal of the GRS is to increase the use of recycled materials in products and reduce the harm caused by its production.
